The 11 acoustic/folk songs on the Into the Wild soundtrack find Eddie Vedder at peace, somewhat. Eschewing typical song structure, these tracks are more meditation than anthem.
Ego and anger may be sidelined, but Vedder’s swagger remains, elevating the environmentally conscious “Hard Sun” to a different level.
As we age, we lose some of the rudderless anger of youth and replace it with reflection.
In “Guaranteed,” both converge in searing lyrics about middle-class materialism and loveless marriages.
Into the Wild isn’t an auditory blitzkrieg on your emotions like a Pearl Jam album, this is a subversively emotional coup d’état.
