A true rock-n-roll story in 100 words.
Deciding to leave The Porter Wagoner Show Dolly Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You” to say “thank you” and pay her respects for all Wagoner had done for her career.
Elvis Presley heard the song and wanted to record it.
She said yes.
The day before The King was set to record it, Presley’s manager, Col. Tom Parker, attempted to bully Dolly. He said Elvis would only record her song if she gave up 50% of her songwriting to Elvis.
She said no.
Today, it’s impossible to think of anyone other that Whitney Houston singing it …even The King.
