Where once there was laughter — silence.
Where once there was talk — silence.
Where once there was passion — silence.
He looked for a sign that she had existed.
A sign that he had mattered.
A sign that any of it was real.
Only the echo chamber of “goodbye” in his head, his heart, and his home, remained.
He crawled into bed, closing his eyes hoping a new day might bring a sign, a sound, of hope.
The sun burst through his window.
He awoke.
He listened.
He heard what he feared most — the indifference of the dead, deafening shriek of silence.
