How do I cope? I ignore the loud media noise. I spend 10-12 hours a day in front of my computer so I'm not immune to what's going on, but big corporate news outlets ... what are they telling me? It's shitty. Yea. I know that. Are they telling me it's getting shittier? Yea. I'm smart enough to piece that together. What exactly are they telling me? Nothing. Absa-fucking-lutely nothing. They're fostering even more anxiety and fear while still driving the profit train:
"Here's Sally in Dallas where a large mob is looting a Target and 100 people have been arrested ... and be sure to tune in at 8p for a new episode of Young Sheldon."
It's shitty. I get it. In no way is any corporate news organization (right or left) making it ANY better. Podcasts dig deeper into subjects and provide more texture to these very very divisive topics and that helps ... somewhat. You just can't get texture or perspective in 90-120 second segments. And no matter where you land politically, we're at a place where no one is talking anymore. Like minded people are talking yea, sometimes even yelling, like minded things at one another. And I don't know what's gained by that. I mean, I get it, it's obvious we can no longer have opposing viewpoints discuss anything anymore.
How do I cope? I dig deep on the topics I care about or interested in and ignore the louder media noise.
There are voices within the loud media noise that need and deserve to be heard. Unfortunately, I don't think you're likely to hear them on most corporate media outlets.
There are only so many ways and so many times you can tell me it's crappy. Tell me how we got here (NYTimes 1619 podcast does a great job, but that's a time investment). Offer different viewpoints. Have discourse. Provide texture. Ad-supported corporate media simply isn't designed to do that. So, I choose to ignore about 90% of it.
But that's me.
And heroin. I have a terrible heroin habit. (on that I am kidding ... and I mean no disrespect to anyone with a habit or struggling to maintain sobriety, my thoughts are with you OR to anyone who has lost a loved one to an overdose ... it was only meant as a joke ... I have now spent more time qualifying the joke than typing the joke, but that's where we are now so I have to wonder if the joke was worth it ... and yes, yes it was.)
