Nontraditional is a show I created. What follows are two pieces of material created in conjunction with it:
The pitch deck.
The script. (link)
I worked with a company called Open Gate Entertainment on creating some of the material. I originally had the script and had entered it in several screenwriting festivals. It was recognized a few times, but the Nontraditional pilot script never won the top prize. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.
While I’m relatively sure Open Gate is a straight-up hustle, they worked with me to create material like the pitch deck below. I’m told this stuff, in addition to things like a show bible and a one pager (for the ADHD set among Hollywood) helps sell projects. My experience with Open Gate was mainly positive primarily because I was forced to take a deeper look at my project.
But, WTF do I know?
The pictures below are the “pitch deck.” As I understand it, the pitch deck is used to pique interest. And if anyone is interested, they’ll read the script. I am applying those principles here. If you like it, you can click on any of the links to d/l the Nontraditional pilot script.
Open Gate claims that they are actively shopping it around to their “partners” but encouraged me to do what I want with the material.
While I like the idea of Nontraditional, I’m biased — I wrote the fuckin thing. With that said, I think it’s a tough sell because I don’t think it has a broad enough appeal.
You’ll note the pitch deck has five seasons. My original concept only called for three seasons, but I was “encouraged” to push it out to five.
Why post it here?
— I’ve been thinking about it for a while and figured why not? I also recall reading an article some years ago by I want to say Jake Kasdan, who suggested that if you write something to post it on the internet. His rationale was that you never know where it may land. I mean, it’s not horrible advice, but it helps to have an Academy Award-nominated writer, producer, director as a father. And posting it into the void like this is a lot like pissin in the wind, I suppose. But if I am to believe Bob Dylan that’s where the answers are …wait, I’m just being told that it’s actually BLOWIN’ in the wind.
Now, not that you asked for it, but here you go: Nontraditional Pitch Deck:
(slide two “Click here for a few words from the Creator” link is NOT there.)
The slide ABOVE and the slide BELOW are to help understand who I would like cast in the roles — dream list as it were. May seem silly, but it plants an image in the mind. TV is a visual medium.
