Witch Taint (Comedian Dave Hill) — Sons of Midwestern Darkness
The truth is I know bupkis about black metal. For a reason I can’t seem to recall I discovered it in the mid-aughts. Metal, any kind of metal to be honest, isn’t my go-to genre, so discovering black metal was more like having a piece of food lodged in your teeth. Which is to say, irritating more than infuriating, and easy corrected with some dental floss or turning it off.
Fast forward a number of years and, again for reasons I can’t recall, I discovered Witch Taint… and couldn’t stop giggling… and I hadn’t even heard a song.
I then found an interview with writer/musician/comedian Dave Hill where he cites the book Lords of Chaos as inspiration. The book is entirely insane, and all real.
Using Lords of Chaos as a kind of phone book, he began emailing some of these black metal musicians. Well, not emailing so much as antagonizing them.
Hill had created a character named Lance, from Gary, Indiana — the self-proclaimed king of black metal who was the front man of “the most extreme black metal band of all time” Witch Taint.
One of the details that make is amusing was that Hill was using the email address of Mr.LouRawls at aol.
You can read a series of exchanges he had with Saihtam, at theblackmetaldialogues.com. Saihtam (Mathias, backwards) is also the owner of Planet Satan Revolution Label — the home of Mysticum — the band that Hill zeroed in on to antagonize.
Dave Hill stopped by Thunderlove Studios to have a chat with Rob Janicke and me. We talked about black metal, hockey, Rob Lowe’s classic movie Youngblood, and of course, Witch Taint.
Dave Hill is a real triple threat — his CV as a writer/musician/comedian is both long and impressive. Far too much to list, but here are two little fun facts:
He was permanently banned from Twitter for threatening to have six with Trump supporters mothers and fathers.
He wrote the theme song to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and performs it with his band Valley Lodge.
The scope of his resume’ explains why there are loads of name checks throughout the episode. It would seem as though Hill has worked with or knows A LOT of people.
This is a fun episode and we raise a pint of blood in your honor as you listen to this episode.
