Interestingly, Chihuahuas are most likely the next breed to face BSL. Pit Bulls are not for everyone and I wish folks did more research on breed characteristics before getting a dog.
Because Pit Bull is an umbrella term and not an actual breed it's tough to get data on what percentage they are in shelters. Because of the broad definition, it's a lot to be sure. I'm not sure about the availability in "those areas" or not, I think that is a perception issue more than fact ... but data is hard to get.
I can tell you that I know several vets who will swear that it's the upper middle class and the wealthy who are more prone to dispose of a pet once the shine has worn off.
Puppies are awesome, but puppies grow up to be dogs, and dogs require work.
