The Democrat’s Official Color is Blue…It’s Rapidly Becoming the Mood
The hyper-focus on the primaries is not only exhausting Democrats and many Americans, but it’s also bumming them out.
The hyper-focus on the primaries is not only exhausting Democrats and many Americans, but it’s also bumming them out.
Well, let’s first address the elephant in the room. The New Hampshire primary just ended and anyone claiming they know who the Democratic nominee will be is full of shite. There is a long road ahead but with that said, I think we’ll have a pretty good idea who it will be long before July.
Secondly, you must keep a vigilant eye on the media. They are becoming increasingly and egregiously complicit in how they’re covering the candidates. They’re gaslighting many by using divisive words like “progressive front runner” or “female candidate” and the one most irksome “electability.”
Don’t fool yourself into believing that the major media organizations don’t have an agenda and a favorite candidate…or one they’d like to put up against the orange idiot.
To that point, I’d like to see reporters, journalists, pundits, et al state who their preferred candidate is. They can attempt to be unbiased, but everyone has one. So, my preferred candidate is Elizabeth Warren and Bernie is a second choice for me. I’ll vote for any Democrat, but it's those two whose ideas and policies more closely resemble my own.
And now with Andrew Yang and that other guy who no one knew was still in the race, Michael Bennet, out of the race, this is where we’re at (listed alphabetically):
Mike Bloomberg
An annoyance more than a real threat. A billionaire Jewish former Mayor of New York City is going to appeal to the everyman? No. Furthermore, while he was able to use his money in New York City to enact policies the city couldn’t afford or that were antithetical to the party. Bloomberg won’t be able to do that on a national or international scale.
He’s a marginal threat if he runs as an independent but I can’t see that happening. I really wish he and Steyer would use their +/-$500 million to back US Senators and local politicians instead of trying to put their thumb on the presidential scale.
Joe Biden
Let’s call it a wrap folks. The best thing he can do at this point is to pack it in and support someone else.
He’s been on a downward trend for almost 12 months so his failures in Iowa and New Hampshire should be shocking to NO ONE! And yet they are.
Look for him to maybe place in Nevada and South Carolina, but win? Not likely. Even though polls still have him leading, he’s done. It would seem the pollsters and his campaign are the only ones who don’t know it yet. Like Bloomberg and Steyer, his support would be much better placed on state and local candidates. As a presidential candidate, it’s all over for him but the crying.
Pete Buttigieg
The only reason the media is warming to him is that they disdain Bernie and Biden is stumbling. The truth is Buttigieg IS a strong candidate but there are some flags that are popping up:
His difficulty with other races is an issue.
I suspect there is more to his relationship with McKinsey & Company then he is acknowledging and it won’t take much to dig it up if he becomes the main focus.
What is his connection with the CIA? It’s there, but this is a typical conspiracy theory that pops up from time to time.
As much as it pains me to write this, his sexuality will be an issue. If you don’t think it is, I would argue one of these things is true: You live on either the East or West coast, you live in a major metropolitan or you’ve never spent ANY time in the Midwest or South. Indeed, we’ve come a long way, but if you think for ONE second that Trump and his league of morons won’t use that against him, you’re not paying attention. I’m sorry to say that this matters.
Amy Klobuchar
I must admit I am surprised she’s still around (and very curious as to the how and why). I think her middle of the road approach is too benign. Also, like Buttigieg, there are some issues with her that would crop up and cripple her if she became the main focus. Mainly, her notorious temper. I can’t see her going toe to toe with Trump and being effective. Think about what you know about her…not much. That’s problematic. She’d be a great member of a Democratic cabinet but as POTUS? I can’t see it happening.
Bernie Sanders
He’s the clear front-runner and biggest threat to the Democratic leadership. Sanders is such a threat that even 2004 nominee and former Secretary of State John Kerry was overheard talking about a run in 2020. Despite calling it “fucking categorically false” the rumors are out there and if we know one thing these days, ANYTHING is possible. But with that said, don’t listen to the arcane math used for delegates, etc. — Sanders remains at the top of the heap.
Here’s where his campaign and potential candidacy is in trouble — he is a self-described Democratic Socialist. That doesn’t bother me and many of his supporters but it’s going to be very hard to get big corporations and institutions (think media and insurance companies) to support him if he ends up the nominee. He also terrifies the wealthy and those big corporations and institutions.
It’s that “socialist” label that’s going to cause him trouble. It’s what Trump and his group of minions and morons will sink their teeth into in order to marginalize him by relentlessly and ruthlessly going after him. Sanders is Trump's choice to go against — it’s why Trump name-checked him during his recent New Hampshire Nuremberg rally.
Bernie Sanders could cause the Democrats to implode and hand the next four years to Trump.
Tom Steyer
This is a vanity run. That’s not to say his heart isn’t in it. I suspect that it is…just not as much as his checkbook.
Elizabeth Warren
This brings us to Elizabeth Warren. Like all of the others, she has her trouble spots. I’m a bit confused as to why she isn’t resonating more but I might argue that her stump speech and her responses are stale:
We KNOW about the brothers in the military.
We KNOW about her teaching.
We KNOW about the $50 dollar community college.
We KNOW about her time at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
We KNOW about the selfies.
I think where she’s stumbling is that her answers to the questions she’s being asked are ALL something we’ve heard before, almost verbatim. She’s got to mix that up or find other ways to say them…at the very least.
And I also think she is the one that Donald Trump is MOST afraid of. She is just as pugnacious as he is and she’s INFINITELY smarter (to be fair, that’s true of any of the Dem’s here.)
It’s only Warren and Sanders who have the mettle to deal with the way Trump chooses to do battle. Biden likes to think he does, but watch his debate performances…at best they’re hit or miss and those are with less much less antagonistic debaters.
For me, this is still Elizabeth Warren’s to lose. I think it is only she and Sanders who have a vision for the country and Sanders is just too scary for many powerbrokers. Warren has the right ideas and messages she just needs to re-align and re-group.
But no matter where you land on a Democratic candidate, a lot of the polling indicates that any one of them will beat Donald Trump.
For fuck's sake:
PLEASE don’t be fooled — simply look back at 2016.
The denizens of the media and pollsters alike simply don’t have the answers and don’t believe them if they tell you that they do.
VOTE!
Defeating Donald Trump is the priority and regardless of who wins this Democratic game of King of the Hill, that should be the priority. It may not be the one you want, but the goal must be tossing that man out of the White House.
Chin up — don’t be blue. It ain’t over yet…it’s just starting.
