This mockumentary comes from the same mind behind the Black Mirror series, Charlie Brooker. The difference being Death to 2020 is considerably less dark. In fact, it’s not dark at all; it’s hysterical. Referring to World Economic Forum in Davos as “Coachella for Billionaires” is pretty much spot on.
Narrated by Laurence Fishburne, Death to 2020 has a cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Tracey Ullman, Lisa Kudrow, Leslie Jones, etc. The film mixes factual information with sharp satire. Sharp enough that you don’t need to question whether it’s a joke or not.
In one scene, an “average” British woman was convinced that the American election process was a 24-hour game show with no winner. The same woman said she was afraid of catching covid, so she began doing everything with her elbows …and then said her boyfriend left her a week later.
Brooker and co. hit on everything awful about 2020 and help you laugh about it. I went in expecting very little, and it delivered way more than I could’ve expected.
