The “processing” abyss that is Medium purgatory.
I wrote an article about Dave Chappelle’s 8:46 back on June 13 (see above picture).
Given the state of things and the protests that were taking place that weekend, I figured I’d write something timely. He had just dropped it on June 12 and the internet was aflutter with his commentary.
Being a Chappelle fan, I watched … and found it something I wanted to write about. So, I did:
Album of the Day — June 13
Dave Chappelle — 8:46medium.com
I’ve been hacking away at this Medium stuff for a while now and I understand there is no promise of curation. I not only understand, but I also agree with that. Look, I’m not Tolstoy by any stretch and have my problems with writing, but I’ve read some real shit here. Worse is that I have read some egregious shit that HAS been curated (psst, Grammarly, and Hemingway App have free options … no, I will not link to them … find them, use them).
And the fact that, by and large, you can publish without curation is a very good thing.
But look, I get it, curation is time-consuming and not everything I (or you) write is gonna be worthy of the time needed to determine what meets the curation criteria (however concretely subjective and nebulous it may be … yep, I’m aware that is contradictory … much like the curation guidelines). Nonetheless, I do agree and that’s mostly fair. Mostly.
I also understand everyone gets busy and time gets away from us.
We’re all only human & I still believe (perhaps naively) that the majority of curation is still done by humans.
With that said, you’d think that topical items might be fast-tracked through the curation machine. Perhaps I should’ve titled the post:
Album of the Day — June 13: that one time at camp when I had a threesome with my two older camp counselors.
You can get dragged down a rabbit hole, rather easily, on Medium that strongly resembles Penthouse Forum.
OR MAYBE
Album of the Day — June 13: I made 100,000 dollars on Medium last month and here’s how you can do it!
Medium can sometimes resemble an insomniac television addict’s worst 2 am Direct Response ad. The people who write this kinda dreck should be drawn and quartered. Just sayin’.
OR MAYBE
Album of the Day — June 13: Keep writing and sharing your stories.
“Keep going buckaroo and someday you’ll get there!” Sis-boom-ba!!
Look, I DO like Medium. I’ve given up on all but a few publications because the larger ones (aka, most popular) take forever to respond … if they respond at all. I wrote an article last year about the Democratic debates that got posted on a publication a week after the debate. Not exactly sure I saw a point in that so I removed it.
Some other publications like Sherry McGuinn’s Rogues Gallery:
Rogues’ Gallery
This is THE place for independent thinkers and respectful rabble-rousers. Release the rogue in you, break free of the…medium.com
and Francine Fallara (and friends) Music Voices:
Music Voices
Music Haven — Music counts, speaks and matters — Curving your soul’s archmedium.com
are two that immediately pop to mind that don’t sit on articles. Thank you.
But look, I posted this on June 13 … 11 days later and I’m still hangin’ tight. To be fair, I’m not enraged by this, it’s just shaking of the head frustration that prompted this little screed.
Although I shouldn’t be too surprised here because this post took just shy of a month to get curated:
I guess I’m glad I’m not writing about anything timely like news … or politics … or the pandemic.
Unless those things involve blowjobs or making 100k/month, you may just have to HANG TIGHT! for your story to be processed.
Godspeed friends!
