I’m not convinced that the degree of grief felt at the loss of a parent or loved one is necessarily age contingent. Grief is so individualistic. Maturity certainly plays a role, for sure. My grief at 40 was certainly different than grief in my 20’s. Which was worse? I couldn’t begin to say. Who can say?
But losing a parent is, and this is crappy to say, the way it’s supposed to be. We are supposed to outlive our parents. They may go far too early, that’s for sure. As I was in the throes of grief, I would remind myself that the best case scenario (outliving your parents) is shitty. It doesn’t lessen the pain.
The best advice I ever got was this: The pain never goes away. The time between feeling that pain grows over time, but it never goes away. For me, that’s proven to be very true. I don’t think of my mom every day now, but when I do, it still stings just as much.
