While this article focuses on the UK, the same is true here in the states. I had a civil partnership with a woman, and registered with the City and State of New York in the hopes I could get her on my insurance plan. I found out that the company I worked for at the time would ONLY consider insurance coverage for “married” couples, regardless of gender. In other words, same sex couples could have a civil partnership OR a marriage but the ONLY avenue for opposite sex couples to include them on their insurance was through marriage. Period. Hard stop. No grudge to same sex couples but what’s good for one group SHOULD apply to the other group. Period. Hard stop.

Any life decision I would’ve been unable to make would’ve been made by my family…and while I love them, I haven’t lived with them in a very long time…I’m pretty sure they have no clue what I’d want.

And don’t even get me started on what is considered “common law” marriage here in the US. It’s NOT at all what you think it may be.
